Someone I'm Thankful For
Someone I’m thankful for is my best friend, Samaa. I met her during 6th grade in Canada, and ever since we’ve been as close as ever. I think what made our friendship unique was our dynamic, prevalent in many different ways and stages of our friendship. Our tastes in almost anything were polar opposites; she listened to Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes whereas I preferred bands such as The Neighbourhood and alternative styles. Her style was very preppy and chic while some days I just threw on a hoodie and jeans. We’d still find our common areas regardless of music or style and our shared interests helped us bond. However, we didn’t instantly click, knowing we were going to be best friends or any of that, in fact, we didn’t really like each other at first. What probably fed into this was neither of us really knowing each other that well at first, and over time, when introduced to each other by mutual friends, we really clicked.
We’d spent practically every single day of junior high and high school by each others’ sides up until 10th grade, and I’ve made tons of memories, compiled inside jokes and amazing experiences with her. We’ve both done a lot for each other she’s really done tons for me, some things being:
She taught me how to play and master chess during 8th grade math.
Helped me with said math work(while ultimately flexing her 97% average in math but still)
Went out to lunch when we could, trying new flavors of bubble tea and poutine.
Made my birthdays the best when she’d spend the whole day with me at our favorite places.
Listens to my feelings and understands me on a level like no other.
You get the point, all in all she’s a person I could trust with my life and more. I can still remember a bunch of great times I’d spent with her:
Playing four square with us overtaking each other on the court in 8th grade.
Spending countless birthday parties at the CORE Mall and going to the cinema with our friend group over the holidays.
Working on the most tedious 8th grade project ever; Our Rube Goldberg Machine. We’d spent over 12 hours in countless libraries across the city building a complex elaborate machine all to close a book for science class.
Goofing off in French class while we made skits and plays.
Sticking together during Band Camp and sharing stories around the campfire and dining hall.
Overall, there’s way too many to recount but I’m grateful for all the wonderful years I got to spend side by side with my best friend. Even now, while we may be apart, we still stay in close, tight contact, calling each other and planning our visits in the break times. Additionally, while we have distinct and opposite personalities, we always enjoy the things we share in common. Samaa has really helped me throughout the periods of my life I’ve known her in, and I hope to have equally supported her as her friend. I think of her as my best friend and always will be no matter how much time has passed since the beginning of our friendship.
It's so interesting that your friendship with Samaa is a case of opposites growing together rather than two people bonding over shared interests. It seems the two of you practically grew up together, and I'm glad you still keep in contact despite the physical distance between you guys. Overall, was very well written, and I like your lists as a way to get us to know Samaa through a number of events rather than going super into depth with one (which might not give us as rounded of a view of her character). Great post!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really amazing how two people can from being strangers to so important to one another so quickly. The same has happened with me at Uni. Coming in, I knew a few people, but for the most part the friends that I am closest to right now are those that I've forged bonds with from nothing.
